Were you…
… considering finally starting strength training right before the pandemic hit?
… just getting comfortable in the gym when quarantine began?
If that’s you, there’a a good chance that you were facing a lot of anxiety about being in a gym performing movements you’re unsure of. And rest assured, you’re not alone! Gym anxiety is something that just about every newbie faces, and since gyms are starting to reopen in some places, we thought now could be a great time to share some of our top tips to overcoming this anxiousness!
Feeling self-conscious and uncertain when you start (or restart) lifting is completely natural. But, when you know how many physical and mental benefits exercise can bring you, it’s important to find strategies that help you push past your fears and get to it! So, here are our top tips to helping you overcome gym anxiety:
TIP #1: WRITE YOUR WORKOUT DOWN
It’s so helpful to plan what you want to accomplish before you even pull in the parking lot. It’s a physical problem, because if you don’t know what to do at the gym, you’re probably not going to pick an effective workout. It’s also psychological, because if you’re uncertain on what to do it the gym, you can really stress yourself out mentally.
If you’re unsure of how to go about coming up with a plan, consider hiring a personal trainer or purchasing a program, like Stronger by the Day (our $9.99/month group training), so you can avoid the guesswork!
TIP #2: FOCUS ON YOUR WORKOUT
Really zone in on your workout and what you’re at the gym to do. At all costs, it’s best to avoid comparing yourself to others. And, if you’re truly focused on working hard on your movements, you really won’t have time to look around and see what other people are doing. Concentrate on the movement you’re doing in the moment, and remind yourself that you’re doing great (how you talk to yourself really does matter!).
Pro Tips:
- One of the best ways to help you focus is by wearing headphones.
- While you’re just getting started, consider getting your training sessions in during off-peak hours so you have less people to worry about.
TIP #3: BRING A BUDDY
Tackling your gym anxiety is easier when you have some familiarity around, and you have someone to joke around with and keep things lighthearted. It’s especially great to go with a friend who has more experience than you. That way, they can teach you what they know, and you guys can learn other things together.
TIP #4: REMEMBER THAT NO ONE IS WATCHING YOU
This is likely going to be the hardest to convince you of (trust us, we’ve been there!), but, in all reality, most people are at the gym to get a good workout in… not to judge other people. Now, if you really can’t get the idea of being judged out of your mind, try to focus on these two things:
- The vast majority of people aren’t sparing you a second of thought. In fact, most people at the gym know how you feel… because they were once a newbie themselves (or they’re also new and feeling the exact same way that you are!).
- If someone is actually judging you, that reflects more poorly on them than it does on you. Remind yourself that you’re there to better yourself! And that’s really freaking cool. Don’t read into what feels like an awkward glance from someone… often times, another gym member might be trying to get your attention to let you know that you can share the piece of equipment they’re using (or to ask if they can share something you’re using).
Go into the gym expecting the best from everyone, because more than likely, that’s what you’ll get! You are on a similar journey as everyone else in the gym, so remember that you all actually have a lot in common. The benefits of movement and getting stronger far outweigh your anxiety, and you can conquer it by keeping these tips in mind! It can be really hard to take the first few steps, but the longer you go to the gym, the more comfortable you’ll be and the more you’ll feel like you belong (… because you do belong!).
